In general terms this paper outlines the technological alternative proposed by IBOPE as a solution to emerging problems of monitoring the television audience behavior. The new non-intrusive peoplemeter, developed by the engineers of the IBOPE Brazil R&D Department, joins creativity to technology in order to identify what is being shown on the TV set of the household , as well as the signal sources (UHF, VHF, Cable and others), with practically no limit of channels. The sniffer is a conceptual update of people meters systems in use at the moment, and is based on the comparative analysis of parameters (positive matching), including audio and video signals, that substitutes with obvious advantages the previous systems, being compatible with the great majority of running TV panel technologies . The introduction will describe the complexity of the problem faced by the research agencies on the difficult task of monitoring the audience behavior, in a complex scenario that promises new and regular developments in the next few years. Then, the presentation will focus on the way in which the new concept of peoplemeter will be facing the present difficulties, positioning it as an elegant and creative alternative to update the present panels. The last sections describe in technical and mechanical terms how the equipment works as well as its limits and potential.
