Google and Nielsen came together to develop a way to better understand how consumers go about researching and buying mobile phones. With the internet in the palms of their hands, consumers interact a lot with the medium before considering and/or evaluating or purchasing any product. We wanted to capture this interaction and how this influences the path to purchase for the category. The goal was to reduce reliance on claim-based research techniques, especially owing to the complexity of the digital touch-points to mobile phone purchases, and move to observation-based research.
This new ESOMAR/GRBN Guideline is for researchers and clients engaged in primary research. It includes all quantitative and qualitative methods that involve direct interaction (such as to get consent) with the data subject, including passive data collection in which the researcher observes, measures or records a person?s actions. It also is meant to provide guidance for those who commission research. Methodologies included but are not limited to surveys, focus groups, in-depth interviews, ethnographic studies and some forms of observational research, including mystery shopping.
Research is no longer linear and traditional reporting methods are stuck in a moment of time? Atomic Research breaks down knowledge into parts, treating research as small atoms of information that can live independently of large reports. This approach helped our UX team to better manage our research findings, where each observation is tagged with supporting evidence to reuse whenever needed.

Building the world's intelligence platform and capturing human behaviour at scale. The market research industry has a major problem: big brands don't trust its results. Companies are fed up with claimed behaviour and outdated panels and surveys. But if people around the world shared their thoughts and actions with us, and we were to use AI and machine learning to capture them, in the moment - then couldn't help the world's biggest companies to act like a local start-up and truly understand any market...?
Consumer insights are the vital element of effective marketing. Creating great communication, building a powerful brand in the age of behavioral economics requires you to understand your audience. Neuromarketing is an excellent extension to traditional survey research. Observing consumers behavior, analyzing their attention, brain reactions and emotional response you could develop the stronger connections with your target audience. For times, neuromarketing research was an expensive and exclusive service provided by specialized agencies. We change this, designing the automated neuromarketing platform for marketers and business owners. CoolTool is a new generation of DIY tools to get consumer insights. It's your multi-tool to measure both conscious and nonconscious consumers insight.
Tsquared Insights is a market research agency established in 2010 and based in Geneva. Its Online Search Insights methodology, in particular, leverages big data from global search activity- around two trillion searchers per year across all major search engines- to find patterns in the interests and preferences of different consumer segments. The new methodology can be assimilated to non-intrusive direct observation of millions of consumers, and provides granularity ranging from total population to micro-trend niche.
With the consistent growth of online retailing, clients from various categories have eagerly been interested in understanding journeys that online shoppers take. While the indirect method using observation/behavioral data has recently emerged as one of the innovative methods for this kind of data, the existing analytic methodology has been insufficient to investigate the 'hidden' core of the online journey that leads to purchase. In this study, by integrating the existing path segmentation with the network analysis for each path type, we revealed an in-depth analysis on 1) the characteristics /structure of the journey itself, 2) the key touch points that serve as core nodes on each journey, and 3) the actionable marketing insights for Samsung to maximise the market opportunity.

BBC World Service and User Research Lab, in partnership with the Centre for Digital Cultures of Leuphana University, have developed a digital ethnographic global network that observes 'real' news behaviour synchronously around the world. This project has been running for 12 months continuously. Within the BBC the Global Network has informed digital innovation, challenged our editorial leaders to review their output on news stories as they happen, across language, theme and organisational boundaries.
