Over the last few years there have been tremendous advances in the world of conjoint analysis in terms of software, mathematics, topics considered, and approaches. These advances create exciting new opportunities for conjoint analysis over the internet. This paper seeks to set a context for conjoint analysis by reviewing how we got to where we are now and then to explore the new possibilities that are opening up because of the web. Finally, the paper will try to draw the threads together by raising questions about where these techniques will take us next.
The paper demonstrates how a very simple approach was applied to a particular problem of 'Trade Off'. As part of a large scale survey into the public knowledge of, and attitudes towards Local Authority Financing, Research Surveys of Great Britain were asked to find out how people would wish to increase or decrease Local Government spending (bearing in mind that they themselves were the source of the revenue) and within the total, how they would 'trade off' expenditure between the various services provided.
Two main themes are pursued in this paper. Firstly, we discuss how a new research method: the trade-off model was used in the context of a major project, focussing particularly on the problems encountered and how these were solved. Secondly, we present the case history of this model showing how it has been used as a basis for management decision making, placing special emphasis on how the model building was achieved.
