Abstract:

Media, internet and telecommunications are playing a major role in helping Saudis reach out and connect with each other and the rest of the world. In this digital age, communications barriers are coming down as many Arab women are breaking age old rules and embracing the freedom of anonymity provided by the internet. As internet usage continues to climb, so does the number of women who have started their own blogs. Women are expressing themselves online in ways they would never do in public. This social blogging segment is at a small nascent stage, but is definitely one of the most important trends to emerge of late. It is already allowing us to closely observe manifestations of self expression in a traditionally conservative society.
