Abstract:
The technical team of Line Staff, in collaboration with the Department of Culture of the Autonomous Government of Catalonia, has developed two tools designed to optimize the analysis of cultural behavior: - Socio-Cultural Index (SC!) - Activity Index (A!) With the 1991 Study on Cultural Behavior in Catalonia, the results of these indexes are presented as a methodological contribution to current research needs in relation to culture and free time. Based on a representative sample of the population, the measurements are taken on a wide range of variables related to consumption of culture. The combination of the various variables and their corresponding weightings result in the two indexes. These indexes are applied to each individual, and expressed so that the overall average is 100. The results show us the oscillations produced in the various segments of the population in relation to the indexes, which also allows for future tracking. Subsequent analysis of the segments allows us to separate out the main indicators in relation to the overall nature as measured by the indexes and suggests to us the design of a categorical socio-cultural variable that might be used as a criterion in social and opinion studies, as well as in studies from the standpoint of marketing.
