Abstract:
The current Batchelor's range of packet soups carries the variety name and the word 'Soup'. Whilst at present this fulfils statutory obligations, the Food Standards Committee has recommended minimum incorporation of particular ingredients in order to qualify for the designation 'Soup'. There is also the possibility that future EEC regulations may have a bearing on how packet soups may be actually designated. With this in mind, it may be necessary to change the names of Batchelor's soups to comply with various regulations, and call packet soups 'soup mixes' or 'Chicken flavour', etc. Qualitative research was therefore recommended to investigate whether any such change of name could lead to consumers perceiving the product/brand less favourably.
