Some advantages of self completed questionnaire in surveys on life styles or socio cultural trends

Date of publication: November 1, 1977

Abstract:

Studies on life styles or socio-cultural trends, which are generally based on questionnaires with 200 to 300 items or questions, usually involves the administering of self-completed questionnaires. This method not only has the advantage of being more economical and practical for the interviewer than the classical interview, owing to the questionnaire’s length ; the nature of the questions asked is such that the presence of an interviewer increases the risk of inhibition or self-censure by the interviewee, whereas the researcher is concerned to obtain answers that are as spontaneous as possible; the presence of the interviewer also increases the risk of "non answers”.
