Abstract:

AIDS is a topic that can potentially affect every member of the Conference. It is probably the major health hazard that European governments have had to face this century. Since the Autumn of 1985 reflexions has been involved in researching the issue on behalf of a number of interested parties, including the government. By the spring of 1987 they had conducted a total of sixty-three group discussions and 108 interviews, exploring people's knowledge of the disease, their response to various government activities, their own sexual behaviour, and so on. This paper takes the cumulative knowledge that has been acquired, and addresses the central issue, to what extent have attitudes and behaviour changed? Our conclusion is that attitudes and behaviour have not changed significantly, and are unlikely to do so until the broad population begin to feel at risk.
