Abstract:
?The other? is an important concept in both linguistics and social sciences, encompassing the complex dynamics of identity, exclusion and cultural interactions. Identity is a product of the interaction that individuals encounter in their family and social structures from the moment they are born. In the process from individual to family and from family to society, groups and identities are shaped through the dichotomy of us and the other. Thus, while ?us? is more familiar and normatively correct, the member of the other group is far from these characteristics. In other words, in the field of social sciences, ?other? is a concept that defines those who are far from the accepted values of the dominant culture and who have not adopted these values. In psychological literature, the concept of other is used to describe the individual's relations with people and objects other than oneself. This concept plays an important role in the formation of an individual's identity and self-perception. When we look at the Turkish and Greek meanings of these concepts, other is defined separately as pronoun and adjective in both languages, as is the case in the English language also.
