Using market research and journalistic techniques to produce circulation building editorial features

Date of publication: June 15, 1976

Author: John Fanning

The circulation figures for the January to June period for 1975 in Ireland showed a circulation decline of 7% for the country's largest selling newspaper - the Sunday Press. During this period it was pointed out to the Sunday Press that earlier in the year the French national newspaper France Soir carried out a large scale lifestyle study of the French population, using a combination of market research, sociological and journalistic techniques. The Sunday Press decided to carry out a similar survey among the Irish. This paper will comment on various problems encountered on carrying out the research.
